Wake Up O Sleeper

come lord awaken us“Part of our mess is not knowing we are a mess.” Mark McMinn (Quoted from Captured By Grace by Dr. David Jeremiah)

What is our slumber? How can we be spiritually asleep? How do we wake up? What does it look like when we awake?

NIV Eph 5:14 This is why it is said: “Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

{Greek=nekrós (an adjective, derived from nekys, “a corpse, a dead body”) – dead; literally, “what lacks life”; dead; (figuratively) not able to respond to impulses, or perform functions (“unable, ineffective, dead, powerless); unresponsive to life-giving influences (opportunities); inoperative to the things of God.}

Listening to my pastor today connected the dots for me. For over a year now I have been wrestling with the phrase “Awake O sleeper”. I have posted in the past a video that portrays just a thought of what I think that means but I failed to convey the full weight of the burden on my heart.

I will try to show you the dots. They encompass scripture from Genesis to Ephesians. The dots made more intricate in reading “Captured by Grace” by Dr. David Jeremiah.

Awake O Sleeper seems to be the very cry of the Spirit right now for our church and the unchurched.

Humans have been asleep since Adam sinned. Separated from God. The second Adam, Jesus, gave his life for us to be redeemed…to wake up. We accept him and are joined again into relationship with the almighty Creator.

NLT 1 Cor 15:47 Adam, the first man, was made from the dust of the earth, while Christ, the second man, came from heaven.

The light begins to shine in the darkness.

NASB John 1:5 The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

The dawn has come. Some yawn and stretch, take up their armor and weapons to begin the fight. Others, shut tight their eyes, for darkness and slumber of comfort is preferred. Jesus still shines the light. They pull the covers over their eyes in effort to preserve their assumptions of themselves, the world and any enemy that may exist. If you ignore it does it really exist?
I can’t help but think of the movie The Matrix. The entire population asleep in incubators. Only alive within their minds. Living a life of indulgence, self fulfilling will, going through all the motions of life. The entire time oblivious to the real, unseen world and the ancient battle raging on. Sometimes, a fleeting glimpse of reality appears reminding them there may be something…something else…the man behind the curtain…something, beyond the covers. A great mystery…

Col 1:26 That mystery which was hidden from the world and from generations but now has been revealed to his Holy Ones,

Eph 3:9 I was chosen to explain to everyone this mysterious plan that God, the Creator of all things, had kept secret from the beginning.

1 Cor 15:51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,

The Mystery is the Good news of Jesus Christ the Savior of the world!

The general population is searching for answers hidden by the thin veil separating the spiritual from the carnal. They search to explain the unknown. They know there is more to the world. But in the quest they can easily become confused and seduced by the unholy enemy. Lies, ghosts, magic, sorcery, form of, angel of light, Harry Potter, psychics, to name a few. The television shows and movies reveal a thirst for knowledge of the unknown. What spirit will they find? There is only light and the darkness. Be careful to search for light because in the darkness is a trap. And you can be snared before you realize it.

KJV Phil 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

If it doesn’t fit this list it does not qualify for the light.

Has an awakening begun? How even misguided some may be? Satan’s counterfeit to keep them asleep?

Pastor Mike used this analogy in his sermon.
A marine asleep. Fitted in his uniform. Grasping his weapons as he sleeps. He does not hear the battle cry. His weapons of no use in the battle.
In Ephesians, Paul is conveying with a sense of urgency the need to join the battle. In fact, in most of his writings he mentions battle, race, soldier, armor.
Really, Ephesians is a book of spiritual warfare. He gives detailed instructions to battle with and to defeat the enemy of our souls.

Are you asleep? Do your weapons rest, unused beside you?

Heavenly Father, I do not want to be asleep walking aimlessly through this life on earth. I desire to be a useful vessel of honor in your hands. Wake me, Lord! Awaken in me your Spirit, draw out the gifts and talents to be used by you for your Kingdom. Awaken me to the battle. Use me. I will go. Help me to awaken others as I speak of your goodness. I will tell of how you saved me, my testimony. Forgive me Lord for not following your precepts. Forgive me for my apathy. I choose today that I will begin again, fresh and new to live for you. Amen.
